When it comes to digital marketing, social networking websites like Twitter and Facebook are amongst the most useful platforms. Whether you’re new to marketing your business, or you just want to make sure your social media profiles are up to scratch, read on for our top tips.
Use a simple, attractive banner
Twitter and Facebook give you the option of adding a header to your social media profile, so design an attractive banner that suits your brand. Don’t clutter this with text, special offers and information as it’s likely to be overlooked – the simpler, the better.
Your avatar can’t be blurry
You’re obviously going to add an avatar to your social media profiles – it’s the face of your channel. A question to ask, though, is whether it looks any good. Low-quality, blurry logos just won’t cut it in this retina-powered world, and avatars littered with white space will struggle to make an impact.
Don’t litter your biography
Your biography, or page description, is your chance to show off what your brand is all about. Filling it with promotional offers or adding links won’t work – be clear, concise and give first-time visitors a real understanding of what you do, or you’ll lose them from the offset.
Use pinned posts carefully
If a visitor lands on your channel for the first time, what will they be greeted with? Is it the latest news and information from your industry, or is it an old pinned post that links back to your Black Friday special offer? Pinned posts have a time and a place, but use them sparingly, or you could give off the impression that you’re not updating your channels regularly.
Avoid underscores and numbers
Your_Company_209 is a lot less powerful than YourCompany, so try to secure an appropriate username for your brand. If your brand name has been taken, be inventive – add your industry or location to your username – and try to avoid underscores and numbers if you can!
Add a location
While Twitter allows you to set a location for your brand, Facebook goes one step further and lets you input your address. The more information your followers have about you, the more likely they are to get in touch or click through to your website. Don’t think that setting a location will limit your brand’s reach – in fact, doing so is known to make you appear more reliable and professional.
Link to your website
Some businesses use their Twitter biographies to link back to their Facebook pages or YouTube channels. Don’t do it. Your website is the only place you should be linking to in your profile, as it gives authority and offers a chance for customers to find out more about what you do.
Pick the right colour scheme
Twitter’s personalisation options mean that you’ll need to select a colour when you edit your profile. Choose a suitable colour that matches your brand and logo – and use an online colour picker tool to get an exact colour code for continuity.
Be responsive with customer service
Facebook adds a responsive badge to your profile if you offer excellent customer service response times, while Twitter recently introduced an oversized Message button to help customers get in touch. Make customer service part of your brand – and emphasise it for effect.
Take a look at your competitors
The chances are that your competitors are doing something different with their social media profiles, so take inspiration from them when launching your own. Perhaps they use a certain hashtag to boost brand visibility, or they’re using a particular colour that stands out?
List your hours
If you have a physical store, add your opening hours to Facebook to give your followers more information about when you’re in operation. This information will feature prominently on your page and will add an ‘open/closed’ logo to your profile for added convenience.
Post a welcome message
When you launch a new social media account for your brand, you should introduce your brand to the world with a welcome message. Make an attractive graphic with your brand name or logo, and say hello to your new followers. If you’re entirely new to social media, you may want to pin your post to your profile and pay for it to be promoted.
